Your Invitation to the Medical Student Research Symposium – April 21

[Photo by Will Jones/WSU Communications and Marketing]All BSOM students and faculty are invited to attend the 3rd annual Medical Student Research Symposium on Thursday, April 21, from 5:45-8:00 p.m. in White Hall on the WSU main campus.

The symposium opens at 5:45 p.m., when 29 student research posters will be available for viewing in the White Hall Atrium. It continues at 6:00 p.m. in 101 White Hall  (Gandhi Auditorium) with welcoming remarks and the inaugural Distinguished Scholar Lecture. A poster reception follows at 6:30 p.m. in the Atrium.

The Distinguished Scholar Lecture will be presented by Katie Bullinger, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate who graduates this year from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.  She completed her Ph.D. research in neuroscience in 2009 in the laboratory of Timothy Cope, Ph.D. After graduation, she will begin a one-year transitional residency at Kettering Medical Center followed by a residency in interventional neurology at Emory University. At the first Medical Student Research Symposium in 2009, Bullinger won awards for Best Overall Poster and Best Presentation.

The symposium is organized by the Wright State Medical Student Research Club with support from the BSOM Office of Research Affairs.

Feb. 22 Lecture Surveys Medical Education Research

Nicole Borges, Ph,D.The next lecture in the 2010-2011 Translational Research Lecture Series is scheduled on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall. The series is presented by the WSU Medical Student Research Club. All BSOM faculty and students are invited to attend.

The lecture will survey “Medical Education Research at WSU” with a panel of faculty and medical student investigators led by Nicole Borges, Ph.D. (above left), associate professor of community health and assistant dean of medical education research and evaluation.  Faculty presenters also include Gary Nieder, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience, cell biology and physiology; and Brenda Roman, M.D., professor and director of medical student education in psychiatry. Student presenters include Micah Prochaska (M4), Heather Rodabaugh (M4), and Adam Deardorff (M.D./Ph.D. student). Download the agenda (MS Word).

Dec. 2 Translational Research Lecture Explores Year-Out Research Experiences for Med Students

Photo of Kristine BusseThe next lecture in the 2010-2011 Translational Research Lecture Series is scheduled on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall. The series is presented by the WSU Medical Student Research Club. All BSOM faculty and students are invited to attend.

The featured speaker will be Kristine Busse, an M4 student at WSU who spent the past academic year in a year-out research program at the Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center at the University of California-San Francisco. She was sub-investigator in 6 clinical trials in psoriasis and eczema, working under the mentorship of John Koo, M.D., a key opinion leader in the psoriasis field. Busse’s talk will discuss clinical trials as well as the process of putting together a year-out research experience during medical school.

Translational Research Lecture Series Begins Sept. 30

The first lecture is scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall. All BSOM faculty and students are invited to attend.

The faculty speakers will be Timothy Cope, Ph.D. (above left), professor and chair, and Mark Rich, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor, in the WSU Department of Neuroscience, Cell Biology, and Physiology. Last year they gave a dynamic talk to the Research Club about building careers based on the scientific method and asking measurable research questions. It inspired the theme for this year’s lecture series, so we have asked them for a repeat performance. You can read more about their neuroscience research collaborations in Vital Signs (PDF).

Research Club Meets Sept. 14

The Medical Student Research Club will hold its first meeting of the 2010-2011 academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 14,  from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall. Lunch will be provided. This will be an opportunity to welcome medical students in the entering class of 2014.

The agenda features second-year medical students Ashleigh Welko and Michelle Keeley, who will talk about their summer research experiences. We will also discuss SMD 616, the new research elective for first-year students.

Welcome to the Class of 2014!

The Medical Student Research Club and the Office of Research Affairs are working together to promote research opportunities for medical students at Wright state University Boonshoft School of Medicine. The Research Club is planning a series of meetings, lectures, and workshops this year that will introduce you to student researchers and potential faculty mentors and help you to develop research experiences during your medical education. The club’s programming culminates in April with the annual Medical Student Research Symposium.

The Research Club will hold its first meeting of the 2010-2011 academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall. Lunch will be provided. The Medical Student Research Club will present the fifth lecture in its series, “Translational Research: From Bench to Bedside,” on Thursday, April 22, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Room 101 White Hall (Gandhi Auditorium) on the WSU main campus.

The faculty speakers conduct office-based research through SOARnet, the Southwestern Ohio Area Research Network. They include John Pascoe, M.D., M.P.H.; William Spears, Ph.D.; Miryoung Lee, Ph.D.; Wm. Cameron Chumlea, Ph.D.,  and Caroline McNicholas, M.A. They will be joined by medical student Jessica Zagory, who has participated in SOARnet research.

SOARnet is a new and growing group of pediatricians and family medicine physicians associated with Wright State University and the Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Its mission is to support its members to design and carry out office-based clinical research of importance and interest to its members, to other primary care providers, and to those involved in formulating health policy. The research network facilitates the formulation of clinical questions and provides support in study design and statistical analysis of data. Read more.

Wright State’s Medical Student Research Club presented the second annual Medical Student Research Symposium on April 1. The event featured 25 scientific research posters, more than double last year’s number.

The symposium is organized by the Research Club with support from the BSOM Office of Research Affairs. It provides a forum for WSU medical students to share their research with faculty, community physicians, residents and other students. Over 50 faculty and students attended this year’s event.

Medical Student Research Club Co-Sponsors Anesthesiology Talk On March 1

The Anesthesia Interest Group and the Medical Student Research Club will host a talk by Amol Soin, M.D., M.B.A. (left), on Monday, March 1 from 6:00-7:15 p.m. in 120 White Hall. Dr. Soin is medical director of the Ohio Pain Clinic and a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Wright State. He will discuss some of his current research projects in anesthesiology and pain medicine. Read more.
