Emergency Medicine Sponsors Summer Research Internships

Dr. Glenn Hamilton announced at the Dec. 10 Research Club meeting that the Department of Emergency Medicine will sponsor medical student summer internships beginning in June 2009. Two internships will be research-related and oriented toward one of the major areas of activity within the HELP Center.  These include Population Risk Assessment, the Modular Emergency Medical System Project, and the Calamityville Campus Project including the Tactical Laboratory and Virtual Calamityville. Another internship will focus on educational research and experience related to the Simulation Center. The internships can be structured as: 1) 2 weeks of elective credits plus 6 weeks of work ($3,000 stipend); or 2) 8 weeks work ($4,000 stipend). NIH Peer Review Policy Changes

Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health  (NIH) announced a number of changes to its peer review system as a result of a year-long review. On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the NIH posted three notices related to the implementation of the previously announced changes. The notices include a revised implementation timeline, as well as the revised review criteria and scoring system that will be used beginning for applications received for potential funding in fiscal year 2010:

Research Club Meets Dec. 10

The next meeting of the Research Club is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 12 noon in 101 White Hall (Gandhi Auditorium). The faculty speaker is Glenn Hamilton, M.D., chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, who will discuss research opportunities for medical students. In addition, Telisha Ortiz, MSI, will give a presentation about IRB’s and human subjects in research. Lunch will be provided by the Office of Research Affairs. Please plan to attend!
